The 2022 Sunset

Here we go, Las Vegas; we are nearing the end of another year. We have been preoccupied these last few weeks with completing our holiday shopping, planning and preparing our Christmas feast, and of course, celebrating with friends and family that we might have overlooked some of the dangers that lie ahead, moving toward the last big holiday of the year. That's right, folks, NEW YEARS EVE!!! It's the day we reflect on a year gone by and an opportunity to look at and for the new year's prospects. So partake, enjoy, and celebrate, but don't overlook the potential dangers that lie between Christmas and the New Year festivities.

If you read my last posting, Have a Boss Christmas, you know that Grouches still prowl about in record numbers. From stealing the packages from your front door to burglarizing your parked vehicles and shoplifting from your businesses to breaking into your homes, the bad guys are still out in force. As a retired police officer, I know firsthand that ex-felons and formerly convicted persons, who still live a life of crime, love this time of year. This is due to the volume of crime our law enforcement must handle while also being low on resourses. Likewise, people who commit their first crimes find early success with a lower risk of apprehension. With record numbers of home deliveries providing a nearly unlimited source of quickly stolen goods, this theft is a favorite even in broad daylight. The relative ease and swiftness with which this theft is completed make it a modern method to steal your Christmas away. It is a time of year that we must be even more vigilant about our safety and home protection.

The holidays also provide an even greater opportunity to access unoccupied homes. Travel is at its peak during Christmas and New Year's Eve. This is when we go home to see parents or fly out to see the kids. Never ignore the fact that bad guys know this too. I have spent this last year sharing tips and providing advice on how we can improve the security of our homes. I hope you were listening and took action while you could. Nothing is worse than coming home to find a broken window or a kicked-in door and your stuff missing. However, if you tightened up your security after reading our blogs, perhaps you can rest a bit easier than you would if you chose to do nothing. We know that those of you who purchased a full set of Boss Security screens to cover your front and back doors, windows, and other access points can rest easier than those who did not. Having the No Break-in Guarantee is very comforting. Knowing that protection is a Boss is even better.

As you venture out and about, please be mindful of your personal safety. Arm robberies have a tendency to rise during the holidays. Businesses are prime targets for robbery because they are flush with cash and merchandise, particularly those businesses that process more cash transactions than others. Convenience stores are always a prime target. However, we mustn't overlook individual robbery either. We all want to sport the new stuff we received for Christmas, i.e., the Rolex watches, diamond rings, necklaces, and of course, your new Coach handbags, but this also invites those impromptu robberies of opportunity. Remain alert at all times. Take a minute to assess what is happening inside a business you are about to enter. As police officers, we are trained to do this very thing. I would do a drive-by first to see if business traffic is normal, then I would park where I could get a look inside before walking into the middle of a robbery in progress. Taking a minute to access can be the difference between being a great witness or a traumatized victim.

My last word of caution goes to roadway safety. Holiday cheer often involves holiday libation—statistically, the number of intoxicated and impaired drivers skyrockets during the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations. Make plans to get home from wherever you intend to drink alcoholic beverages. With Lift and Uber being so inexpensive, wouldn't it be better to spend $50 to avoid a DUI stop, jail time, or worse, an injury/fatality accident? If this ride cost is too much, carpool with a designated driver. It's better to sacrifice for the good of the many than serve the wants of the few. Step up and be that friend who will abstain from drinking so others can partake as they see fit. Just think of the lives you may be saving. I don't know how one comes back from seriously injuring or killing another in the name of a good time. Let's all be smart and get a ride.

We hope your Christmas was everything you wished it would be. Here's looking to the future…2023, here we come! Have a Happy New Year from Boss Security Screens.

Until next time, be safe and remain vigilant!
